Paint Your Grief

  • Temperance Alley Garden 1931 13th Street Northwest Washington, DC, 20009 United States (map)

Are you grieving the loss of a loved one? a pet? a break up? changes to your body? or a dream that is no longer serving you? Come paint through your grief with local portrait artist Ellie.

In this workshop, she’ll provide a demo on a tried-and-true way to paint a moving portrait. This can be a self-portrait conveying how you’ve changed, a portrait of your person, or a portrait of the friends carrying you through. Interwoven throughout, she will provide reflection questions and opportunities for you to share about your grief.*

No painting or drawing experience required. Acrylic paint and primed, unstretched canvas or cardboard to paint on will be provided.

Please come prepared with the following:

  • Take time to journal. What grief is heavy on your heart now? If it is too soon to make art about it, is there another grief journey you are finally able to engage with?

  • Bring reference photos related to your grief. They can be of yourself, your person, your friends, animal, etc. It’s helpful if they are high quality and if you’re a beginner, mouth closed is easiest.

  • Any supplies you want. Especially if you want to work in another type of artistic medium.

*Ellie is bringing her perspective as an artist and fellow human experiencing loss and is not a licensed therapist.
